In Sydney, unleaded averaged 237.0 c/L over the week to 4 October 2026, 4th cheapest of the eight capitals; the range across the week ran from 236.4 to 237.4.
Against the national average of 237.3, that is −0.3 cents; on a 60-litre fill the difference comes to $0.18.
Sydney servos report every price change to FuelCheck, the NSW Government scheme that also covers the ACT and Tasmania. The live feed needs an API key; the full price history is open, published once a month on Data.NSW, and it goes back to August 2016. That history is what lets this page rebuild the city's daily average and its cycle, a month behind the bowser.
Sydney runs a long cycle rather than a weekly one: prices slide for three or four weeks, then the majors restore them in two or three days. Picking a weekday does next to nothing here; picking the right week of the cycle does a lot.
Wholesale against the bowser in Sydney
The terminal gate price behind Sydney's bowsers averaged 232.7 c/L over the same week, leaving a gross margin of 4.3 cents; on diesel the margin was 13.9. The terminal moved +1.2 cents in seven days and +33.5 in 28.
Over five years Sydney's terminal price has run from 141.3 (7 December 2021) to 249.0 (26 March 2026); the dipstick at the top of the page marks where today's 234.3 falls. Retail follows the terminal with a lag of a week or two, which is what the forecast page uses.
August 2026 in the FuelCheck record
Through August 2026, the average Sydney servo charged 200.0 c/L for U91 according to FuelCheck's own record of price changes, and Earlwood came out cheapest at 188.2. Monthly averages flatten the cycle, so read the suburb list as habit, not as a promise for tomorrow.
By brand, Arko Energy averaged 192.7 and BP 203.9; the brand comparison sets these against WA's live list, and E10 against U91 and the premium grades has its own page.

FuelCheck and what an API key would add
A free NSW FuelCheck API key (from api.nsw.gov.au) would put every Sydney servo on this page with today's price, the way FuelWatch does for Perth. Until then the station detail here is the open monthly history: real prices, a month old, used for cycles and for which suburbs and brands come out cheap.
Questions people ask
What is the average price of petrol in Sydney?
237.0 c/L for unleaded over the seven days to 4 October 2026, with Sydney diesel on 281.1 (AIP weekly survey).
Is petrol cheaper in Sydney than the national average?
Yes. The gap was −0.3 c/L against a national 237.3.
What is the best day to buy petrol in Sydney?
No weekday stands out in a year of FuelCheck data. Sydney's cycle runs over several weeks, so the trick is to fill late in the slide, before the restoration.
