FuelWatch, every WA servo of the brand. Right column: gap to the WA median.

Brand matters less than suburb, and suburb less than the day of the cycle. Still, some brands sit under the market week after week, and the table shows which.

Two measures sit side by side: the median price of each brand's WA servos today, from FuelWatch, and the brand's twelve-month gap to the Perth metro median. For Sydney, the NSW FuelCheck record gives each brand's average U91 over the last complete month.

Costco and the independents (Liberty, United) tend to sit under the market; the majors with the largest networks (BP, Ampol, Shell and Reddy Express) sit near or above it. A brand's average hides a wide spread, though: the cheapest BP in a suburb can beat the dearest independent next door.

Brand also matters less than grade: the gap between 91 and 98 at the same servo is bigger than most gaps between brands (grade by grade).

Questions people ask

Which fuel brand is cheapest in Australia?

Costco, where you have a membership and a warehouse nearby. Among open-to-all brands, independents such as Liberty and United usually undercut the majors.

Is brand-name fuel better?

All fuel sold in Australia must meet the same national fuel quality standards; premium brands add their own additives.
