Across the country, unleaded averaged 237.3 c/L in the week to Sunday 4 October 2026, 0.2 cents lower than the week before (AIP, from Motormouth's survey of servos). Diesel sat at 284.7 c/L: a gap of 47.4 cents a litre, or $28.44 on a 60-litre fill.
Of the eight capitals, Perth was the cheapest at 232.8 c/L and Darwin the dearest at 245.2; the spread between them is 12.4 cents. Country towns paid 240.1 on average against 235.9 in the cities, which is the freight bill showing up at the bowser.
Upstream, the national terminal gate price for unleaded was 232.8 c/L on Friday 2 October; that is the wholesale price a servo pays at the terminal, GST and excise included. Its five-year average is 170.7, and the record of 249.4 was set on 26 March 2026. The wholesale signal for the next fortnight reads that trend city by city.
Capital cities side by side
The table puts each capital's weekly bowser average next to the terminal gate price for the same seven days. The difference is the gross margin: what pays for trucking, the site, the staff and the profit. This week it is thinnest in Adelaide (3.3 c) and widest in Canberra (12.2 c); Canberra has no terminal of its own. When the terminal climbs fast, as it has over the last four weeks, retail lags and margins shrink; they widen again on the way down.

ULP and diesel: AIP weekly averages from Motormouth price data. TGP: average terminal gate price for the same week (Canberra uses Sydney's terminal). Margin = ULP minus TGP, both GST-inclusive; it pays for freight, the retailer and the cycle.
