Diesel averaged 284.7 c/L across Australia in the week to 4 October 2026 (AIP), −2.0 on the week; Perth was the cheapest capital at 275.3 and Canberra the dearest at 293.1.
The bush pays more: the regional diesel average was 286.1, and in the Northern Territory outside Darwin it reached 317.4 c/L. A 200-litre fill at the national average costs $569.40; at the NT regional average, $634.80.
At the terminal, diesel cost 263.4 c/L on Friday 2 October against 232.8 for unleaded. In WA, where every servo's price is public, the cheapest diesel today is 253.3 c/L and the median 279.9; premium diesel and the petrol grades are compared on the fuel types page.

The diesel premium
For most of the last decade diesel and unleaded traded within a few cents of each other at the terminal. 2026 broke that: distillate tightened first when the conflict began, and the premium is still 30.6 cents. The chart shows three years of the gap; anything above zero is diesel dearer.

Supply after the March shortages
In March and April 2026 hundreds of servos ran dry of diesel or petrol for days, and the Commonwealth relaxed fuel standards to keep product moving (ABC, 24 March 2026). Searches for 'fuel shortage Australia' peaked at 110,000 that month and were down to a few hundred by August (Google Ads data).
No state publishes stock levels; a servo that runs out simply stops reporting a price. That is why this site has no shortage map, and why the WA list is the best proxy: a site missing from tomorrow's list is worth a phone call before a long drive.
