Melbourne's servos charged an average 235.0 c/L for unleaded in the week ending 4 October 2026 (AIP), which ranks the city 3rd of eight.
The national figure for the same week was 237.3: Melbourne sits 2.3 cents under it ($1.38 per 60 litres).
Melbourne has had its own rules since 2025. Every Victorian servo must report prices to Servo Saver, run by Service Victoria, and since 10 March 2026 each site lodges a maximum price for the next day between 8:30am and 2pm; caps are published by 4pm and bind from 6am. Prices can fall during the day but not rise (Consumer Affairs Victoria).
The public Servo Saver API releases its data with a 24-hour delay and only to registered users, so the weekly AIP survey is the number used here; a key would let this page list Melbourne's servos the way the Perth page does.
Wholesale against the bowser in Melbourne
Wholesale first: Melbourne's terminal gate for unleaded averaged 231.1 c/L across the week, so the servos kept 3.9 cents a litre before costs (diesel: 19.2). Over 28 days the terminal has moved +33.7 cents; over the last seven, +2.0.
The dipstick up top is the five-year view: Melbourne's terminal gate has been as low as 141.1 (8 December 2021) and as high as 249.1 (26 March 2026), and today it reads 232.4. Servo prices trail those moves by one to two weeks; the wholesale signal turns that lag into a call for each city.
Regional Victoria: 30 towns this week
Out of 30 VIC towns in the survey, 2 beat Melbourne on price. Geelong led at 233.1; Corryong trailed at 260.5.

Servo Saver and the daily cap
The cap changes what a Melbourne driver can plan: from 4pm each day the next day's maximum at every servo is known. It is the closest thing on the east coast to the Perth rule, with one difference: a Victorian servo may still cut its price during the day.
Quick answers
How much is unleaded in Melbourne right now?
AIP's survey for the week ending 4 October 2026 put Melbourne unleaded at 235.0 c/L; diesel was 284.1.
Does Melbourne pay more than the rest of Australia?
No: 2.3 c/L less than the 237.3 national figure.
Can Melbourne servos raise prices during the day?
No. Since the Victorian daily cap started in March 2026, a servo can lower its price during the day but cannot go above the cap it lodged the day before.
